Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha -lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant, it may improve recycling of vitamin C, E, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10, all of which are antioxidants. ALA is reportedly used in diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, glaucoma, prevention of cataracts, and prevention of neurologic disorders, including stroke. ALA increases muscle cell glucose uptake and increases insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes, this may help decrease the development of diabetic complications. ALA may improve regeneration of glutathione, which may limit damage leading to the formation of cataracts. Also, it has been shown that individuals with stage 2 open angle glaucoma showed significant improvement by taking ALA 150 mg. daily for 2 months. People who are prone to hypoglycemia or are taking antidiabetic must use caution when taking ALA.
